What do I need to do?
Come to the even with a clear head (no drugs or alcohol at driving events, period!) and be sure that your car is gassed up, the tires are in good shape and inflated to the proper pressure and you don't have a lot of stuff rolling around in the trunk (stories of dented trunk-lids from bowling balls and floor jacks are not as uncommon as you'd like to think...even amongst veterans of the sport).
Be sure to get good sleep the night before and get there early so that you can get signed in, look at the course, and have some time to meet new friends. After all, you're going to be around people who have the same interest as you: having fun safely with their high-performance cars. You're probably going to want to look at all the cool machinery people have brought and to answer questions about yours.
Pay attention to the scheduled times: It would be a bummer to not be able to drive because you missed the drivers meeting.
Be open to learning. Almost all of us who have a high performance car think that we know what we're doing. But as much experience as any of us have, there will always be someone who has more. Be open and willing to learn new skills. You'll be amazed how much you learn from this kind of experience: about your car and your self!
Be safe. It's everyone's job at an event like this to be watching out for the safety of your self, your fellow competitors, spectators, and the event itself. And remember, there are no F1 contracts or sponsors commitments up for grabs. We're just out for a fun day with friends.
What should I bring?
What to bring with you on race day...
This will depend on how serious of an autocrosser you are. If you're just beginning, you won't need to worry about bringing a lot of tools or equipment but do bring a helmet if you have one and make sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, a folding chair, and something to drink. As you look through the list, use your discretion and good sense.
- Your drivers license
- PCA or Audi Membership Card: it will earn you a $5 discount for the event.
- Pad and pencil (to draw course map and write down advice)
- Business cards for your new friends
- Helmet (if you don't have a helmet, we'll have loaners available)
- Driving shoes (not necessarily "dedicated" but something that is comfortable and allows for freedom of movement)
- Numbers and class markings (magnets or decals). If you don't have these you can use masking tape or shoe polish.
- Tire pressure gauge
- Portable Jack (only if you're bringing dedicated race tires)
- Torque Wrench (there will be some on hand)
- Tools in case you need to repair something
- Portable air tank or compressor (if you're serious about times, tire pressures can mean a lot)
- Chalk or white shoe polish to mark your tires
- Windex and paper towels
- Work gloves
- Racer tape (duct tape)
- Clean Towels
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Extra clothes, hat, rain gear, umbrella
- Garbage bags (to cover things if it rains)
- Folding chair
- Thermos of water or other non alcoholic beverage
- Gatorade
- Cooler with lunch and/or snacks (the lunch counter at Sandia will be open)
